Mrs. Bala's Journey at Bethany High | The Lighthouse Legacy Podcast

Early days of Bethany (1980s)

She recalls when the school was in Langford Town, operating from a residential building with cozy interconnected classrooms. A garage served as the science lab, and music classes were held around a piano. Later, when the school shifted to Koramangala, facilities were still under development, with prize days held outdoors.

Changes over time

Mrs. Bala highlighted the expansion of the campus, increasing student strength, and remarkable improvements in academics. She noted that uniforms were once khaki for boys and green for girls.

Teaching journey

She began as a Math and Science teacher before transitioning to Biology and ultimately Chemistry. Though she enjoyed all subjects, Math remains her favourite.

Memorable moments

She cherishes a student telling her that her teaching inspired them to pursue higher studies in chemistry. She also shared a story about disciplining a mischievous student, later reconnecting with him years afterwards.

Bethany's distinctiveness

She emphasised the school's strong value system, balance of academics with extracurriculars, and opportunities for students to showcase talents.

Leadership and legacy

She has worked under four principals, beginning with Mr. Mar David, a strict disciplinarian. She also played a key role in the formation of Minion House, choosing its motto “Abide by Truth” and dark purple as its colour.

Reflections

Despite seeing students grow into adults with families, she still fondly remembers them as children in their uniforms. She deeply values the relationships and memories built across decades.
